Dubai, United Arab Emirates - The government of the United Arab Emirates on Monday started issuing 96-hour visas to airline passengers stranded in Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports because of a flight ban in Europe triggered by volcanic ash from Iceland.
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Lieutenant-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the issuance of the temporary visas in accordance with existing rules to ease their travel ordeal and processing in the country.
Many of the stranded Europe-bound passengers are booked with Emirates Airlines, whose 30 planes are grounded because airports in Europe are closed as a safety precaution against the volcanic ash from an erupting volcano in Iceland.
An official of Emirates said the airline is losing $10 million in revenue a day and is paying $1 million for the accommodation of stranded passengers
